Brass Monkey Cronulla
It’s been 4 decades since the Shire rock band FINCH performed anywhere.
“ We met in June for the first time since ‘76 for a jam….to try it out and it was so much fun. Big smiles beamed instantly across the studio as we clicked from the first song.
Boom ! The original 4 members rediscovered that exhilarating source of joy from our youth – shared passion for music of the time, so FINCH is rearing to fly again.”
Peter McFarlane (drums) , Tony Strain ( bass), Bob Spencer( guitar) & Owen Orford (vocals) will perform original FINCH material written between 1973 -1976 (Drouyn , Roses , Short Changed Again & Thunderbird) plus some Cream, Free & Led Zeppelin favourites - just because ! 2 sets with interval.
In ’73 FINCH won the 2SM / Pepsi Pop Poll, recording 3 original songs for the acclaimed soundtrack Drouyn to the late Bob Evans’ surfing film mid-1974. With hits like ‘Stay b/w Roses’ and ‘Short Changed Again’ FINCH toured nationally sharing stages with: Buffalo, Hush, Sherbet, Feather, Ted Mulry , AC/DC, Skyhooks, Supernaut , Stevie Wright & Dallimore. FINCH regularly played Cronulla Masonic Hall , Shire CYOs, The Last Picture Show (supported by AC/DC), Hurstville Rivoli, Gunnamatta Park , Thirroul, Pt Kembla , Mt Pleasant , Wollongong , Kiama & Ulladulla.
The early 70s was such a fertile musical time for rock music. For Finch Sutherland Shire & the Illawarra Coast was the epicentre.
Now FINCH has a second chance & the reformation is set for a handful of shows with the original 4 piece line up.”
You’re only young twice !
Tickets for both shows will go on sale to the public Tues 3 Dec
“Raised in the late 60s under the spectre of the Vietnam War we were all heavily influenced by Elvis, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Hendrix, Cream, the Summer of Love & Woodstock. The Doors, Black Sabbath, Free, Humble Pie, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Yes, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, The Faces, Wishbone Ash, Pink Floyd, Grand Funk Railroad & Bad Company. In Australia we had Chain, Billy Thorpe, The Masters Apprentices, Doug Parkinson in Focus, La De Das and just starting out like we were …The Angels, INXS , Midnight Oil, ACDC, Skyhooks and the mighty Cold Chisel ! We wanted to play in a rock band and were fortunate to have lived that dream once in Australia.”
In 1976 FINCH released its debut album ‘Thunderbird’ (Crystal Country Gorge, Sailaway, Valley Of Tears, One Nighter, Pink Spiders, Poser) and the album will be presented almost in its entirety.
Guitarist Bob Spencer was a 14 year old high school student when he joined in 73 and went on to play with Skyhooks , The Angels, Swanee and now is integral to Rose Tattoo.
