When people ask me the question, “So when did you start singing?” Instinctively, I always give the same answer - ‘Ever since I could talk, I think’ - and its true. Singing has always been my thing. The thing that I was known for when I was little. I was just a tiny girl with braids in her hair, who had a voice that almost sounded too loud to be coming out of her body.
At a young age, I discovered the endless possibilities music creates. I adore the way it makes you think, feel, dance, cry, laugh - sometimes in such a simplistic way, you hardly notice. But ultimately, I love the way makes us feel human; in a rather magical way. How is it that something we can’t even touch, can somehow feel so tangible to us?
Jazz music was a real game changer for me. Like anything thats good for you, when you first get introduced to it - you hate it. But, somehow it grows on you until eventually you become obsessed. In a weird way, my initial hatred for Jazz music is what makes me love it even more today. It tested my limits, broke my boundaries. Something about those sultry vocals juxtaposed by the sweetness of the words they sing has always resonated with me. I can only wish that my music will resonate with people the same way.
‘Cry Baby’ was the first song I ever released. It was also the first song I wrote that I was proud of. It was the first song I wrote that made me feel something. That same sensation returned with my second single ‘Let’s Forget We Were in Love’ - now i’m addicted to that feeling. Its all I search for when I write.
Sometimes it takes a bit of time to find that feeling - but when you do; its almost as if all the stars align. Until then, I will forever be rearranging the stars
