SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS 2016 LINEUP ANNOUNCEMENT
Lovers of festival feels, campground co-ops and slick sounds…time to listen up!
From Friday 22 to Sunday 24 of July, the green fields of North Byron Parklands will once again become a mecca for music and arts fans as the 16th annual Splendour In The Grass Music and Arts Festival plays host to over 100 acts across The Amphitheatre, Mix Up, GW McLennan and Tiny Dancer stages.
From influential post-punk trailblazers and globally acclaimed garage revivalists to producers at the top of their game, esteemed enigmas and some of Australia’s most established and promising artists – Splendour 2016 has peak sing-a-long guaranteed! And so much more…
Sometimes I sit in a drumming circle. Sometimes I just sit… at THE GLOBAL VILLAGE where this year you’ll find a brand new stage! From 5pm each day Global Village’s World Stage will feature a bunch of Australia and New Zealand’s most popular contemporary world music acts including Bobby Alu, Kalidad, Ziggy Alberts, Cambodian Space Project, Bustamento and more. Plus, you can catch some burlesque, conscious theatre and circus performers or partake in massage, healing, tarot readings or work on your downward dog.
It wouldn’t be Splendour without THE TIPI FOREST. This Splendour In The Grass institution has been flying the flag for underground sounds, alternative beats and interpretive dance since the very beginning. Expect to take in tunes from the rainbow region’s freshest producers and DJs, interactive art, playful performances and a totally transcendental light show while you dance under the stars with your crew, old and new.
Life ain’t all throwing shapes between the tipis. No it’s not. At some point you have to contemplate the big existential questions. Conveniently, this usually happens at around 10am when THE SPLENDOUR FORUM kicks into action with a riveting program of panels and discussions featuring an impressive lineup of clever and witty guests including Splendour favourite, Q&A’s Tony Jones. Or, you could just say “fuck it” and make a pom pom…
SPLENDOUR IN THE CRAFT, that oasis of glitter, bedazzling and hot glue guns is back with a pom-tacular program of workshops by a bunch of the country’s most legendary makers. Note: approach body painting with caution. Last year some (okay many) punters requested rainbows and flowers but walked away with glittery dicks on their cheeks. Soz. Not.
SPLENDOUR ARTS returns in 2016 with a bumper program of performance, painting, installation, video art and sculpture that spans the length and breadth of the site. Those strange folk at the barn will return, we’ll have a new video art space and if you’re thinking about getting hitched…. Stay tuned as SPLENDOUR ARTS returns with another crop of innovative contemporary artists, ready to create those unexpected moments!
Not feeling quite boho enough? You’ll find all you need to look Tinderrific amongst Splendour’s myriad MARKETS. Plus this year we’ll be introducing a new space featuring the Splendour edit of what we love right now from Australian fashion, food, drinks, games, pop culture and urban style. All the things!
Feeling a bit hangry? There’ll be SNACKS FOR DAYS at no less than three food halls and The Truck Stop featuring a bunch of Australia’s best food trucks. Plus there’s a bar for every occasion – MOËT CHAMPAGNE BAR, CONTIKI BAR, MO’ROCKIN WINE BAR and the ever popular SMIRNOFF COCKTAIL BAR with a different party each night!
Then there’s SING FOR YOUR SUPPER (Buskers Stage), SPLENDOUR LATE NIGHT COMEDY CLUB featuring some of the country’s best comedic geniuses, and our festival for the kiddies…
LITTLE SPLENDOUR is back with a world of wonder for our littlest punters (0 – 15 years) and their families! With areas for both little and big kids, plus locally roasted coffee to keep the adults on track (we got your back), Little Splendour has the whole family covered!
Check out the tipi area for parents with babies, mega sandpit, music garden, story telling tipi, littlies' jumping castle and an art and craft zone called the Artie Fartie Partie. The bigger kids will be kept busy with a climbing wall, ropes course, sports and games, face painting, henna tattoos, and giant board games. During the day there’s loads of stuff for all ages to try like arts, craft, music, dance and active workshops. And new this year, you can check out Trick Kicks soccer, a science show and Indigenous performance. Those kids are going to be totally cactus after all that. Hello adult time!!
We’ve made some good improvements to the Splendour site since the last event that will make for a more comfortable experience for everyone, no matter the weather. We’ve improved the access to and around the Amphitheatre and other venues, with better quality and additional pathways, and we’ve dug deep on the drainage. We’ve also changed up the camping!
In 2016 there will be new camping choices available including the option to camp with your vehicle. We can hear you cheering from here! The camping area closest to the event site will still be sans cars but we’re all about options. For the time being you only need to purchase your event and camping ticket. You’ll be able to choose where you park your rig when we release vehicle passes on Monday 30 May.
Onsite camping is available for up to 5 nights – with early entry into the campgrounds available from Wednesday 20 July – so bunk in for an easy and affordable way to experience Splendour. Feel like treating yourself? Travel light and book yourself into Tepee Love, Flash Camp, Tent City or Byron Bay Camping Hire. Kids in tow? The Meadow, our family friendly campground will also return in 2016.
And if you’re booking a campervan, please steer clear of sexist slogans! You know who you are. It's 2016, get with the program!!
Remember you will need to purchase a vehicle pass for the day you want to arrive, available Monday 30 May. You can find more information about camping and vehicle passes at splendourinthegrass.com.
Finally, when you do purchase your ticket to Splendour 2016 please be a decent human and add carbon offset.
